Design Wall Monday- October 20, 2014

The month is half over and I have to see what still needs to be worked on from my October Goals

 October Goals

1-Catch up on A- Z for You and Me Blocks- need to make K-Z and put Center together. I made a few at Retreat

2- Work on Roma's DWR at Retreat Yep

3- Christmas Gifts for the Grandchildren

4- NewFO- Lamb Quilt (QM June 2014 issue)

5 - Quilt the Mariner's Compass RR for Cassie

6- Quilt the Red & White Challenge DONE

That leaves some Secret projects that I can't show, my NewFO and Cassie's Mariner's Compass.

I am anxious to make this even though it won't be for a grandchild.

I put it on my NewFO list before meeting Deonn at the Big Town Quilt Show in Midway, Utah.

I have the Accuquilt Baby Go and Half Hexigon Go die and can cut it out quickly if I can just stay home.

So for now the Mariner's Compass is back on the wall again.  

  I don't really have any excuses for not getting the borders on at Retreat

I left my Pinwheel blocks and tape measure at home though.

I can get it quilted this week if decide what to quilt on it soon.  I have all the stuff I need to do it!

Any suggestions for quilting?

DWM- Not the oldest UFO - but Close- 9-8-14

I started to put the quilt in for M & C and the thought crossed my mind again that 

I really need to finish and quilt that Mariner's Compass Round Robin Quilt for the lady in my WARD.

I chose the Fabrics way back in November of 2012 HERE.

I started cutting pieces for the 1st Pieced border HERE

I added the first Pieced Border HERE

I worked on it again in February of 2013 HERE

HERE it is on my To-do list

I made a few Pinwheels for the border HERE

I tested the Pinwheels borders out with possible Border fabrics HERE 

I realized I would have to FROG it a LOT HERE

HERE it is on the Blog again April 2103, I'm asking opinions of my readers.

This is what it looked like this AM!!!

It's High Time to get it Finished and delivered to it's rightful owner!

I've added a 2.5" plain Pink Border and a 5.5" printed border that looks like the 

Crazy Quilt Blocks on the original quilt.

It measures 52" right now

Do I stop and quilt it or should I add just one more border?

What color would you add? Yellow? Green?

OR- should I take off that last border and insert a Green one?

See why this one isn't done???

I need some more help from the Quilting Committee, LOL!

PLEASE leave your thoughts in the comments, I need to get this one off my project list.

I ended up putting my Temecula Row Quilt on "Betsy"to TEST the
Meandering Feather Pattern I want to use on M & C's Quilt.
It worked pretty well to 'float the top' on this small quilt.

Books signing with Jennifer Chiaverini

The Tattered Cover was where Jennifer had her Book signing in Colorado last week.  

Janessa drove me and we were early.  I am a front row gal!

She read a part from the new book, The Spymistress then took questions. 

In the pictures below she has a Lei on from an anonymous Fan. Her husband, Marty came with her.

I think she didn't know who I was until I told her. (she wasn't wearing her glasses and kept squinting)

                                  

She was glad to see my quilts and signed them for me.  This was my Round Robin quilt from

 the SBS Yahoo Group back in 2010-2011.  Under it you can see a bit of my Star Swap from that group also. See the stack of books I brought home, that she signed.

 This is Faith Morlan a faithful follower and "friend" of Jennifer listed in the Loyal Union Sampler Pattern Book , her name is also in "The Union Quilter". Spoiler: a character named for her WON the Union Quilt!

This is the Block she made for the Book.  I had her sign it for me. 

Jennifer signed the Cotton Boll Block for my Aloha Quilt.

 Since the time I first showed this quilt, my daughter, Janessa has wanted it.  Since my luggage was full and I mostly wanted to show it to Jennifer and have her sign it, I left it with Janessa.

Colorado was a Lot of Fun in Three days!!! Where is my next Adventure???

Is the FROGGING Worth it?? YES!

I sure hope that this is the last time I have to "frog" this week.  I took the whole thing apart, down to the center and trimmed it to the size that it should have been.  It lays much more flat now.  The added borders had to be adjusted also as per the directions in the Pattern Book.  I found the finished sizes that were used back in 2010 when I did the Round Robin the first time.

Getting this put back together was on my List this month.  I've done pretty good so far this month. 3 of the 5 projects have been worked on so I can show progress for next Month.  

This will have to count as my Mid-Month report. I didn't see a Link over at Patchworktimes, yet.

While sewing it all back together I got 2 more Lotto Blocks made for Guild and of course more 4-patches.

Today was the day to go out for our M & M Group.  It was nice to see the blocks that were finished so I could take pictures there.  I've thought about starting the 2nd BOM, but have resisted so far.  I have plenty to keep me busy already. I went in to STASH and they Brought these Books home from the Quilt Market in Portland.  They even had TULA sign a few copies so we could buy them.  NICE!  They have several of TULA's quilts on display in the store.

 

It's almost Memorial Day and I will be going to Moses Lake to put flowers on the grave of my parents.
I am saddened by the Tornado in Oklahoma as many are. Grateful those I know there are safe.  Bonnie posted HERE  if anyone wants to send quilts for the families there.

"Quilting by Committee"

This beautiful Wednesday I am still playing with ideas for the final treatment of the Mariner's Compass Quilt.
Thanks for all the comments from Monday's Post.  I think this is called "Quilting by Committee".
The quilt talked to me as I laid it out on the floor. Placed fabrics beside the center and took the pictures. I had to turn it on-point, it's just another way of viewing it.  The process is a good one to put it out there and take time to ponder what works best for this quilt.  I had to share it with the future owner of this quilt too and got some insight to how I will get it quilted when it is finally ready for that.

The center was trimmed and the pinwheel borders are on.  Success is good when the borders that are planned - work! Now it is time for the MATH.  I'm hoping to get out to visit Lynn @ Thread and Bolts today.  Her MATH is better than MY Moses Lake MATH... As you can see I'm adding the solid triangles to make this bigger before the final borders.

The first try with my MATH doesn't look like it is quite right.  I hope to press out more of those wrinkles. 

 I should have paid more attention in those MATH classes.  

Someone should have told me then that Quilting included MATH. HaHaHa.

As for the Secret Project I mentioned it is for the Quilt Alliance. I have the design figured out and found part of a UFO to make it.  They extended the Deadline to June 1st. Check it out HERE.

Design Wall Monday -April 22, 2013

I am using my "Design Floor" again this week -there are more border decisions to make this week  All of the Pinwheel block border units are made and I like how they look surrounding the center.  I need to trim the center before I sew them on since I made the solid triangles extra big.

 Testing border Option 1 with a slightly darker Pnk and the dot fabric for the outer border

 Option 2 has a different print with lots of colors. This fabric wasn't used yet and could be the backing too.

Option 3 is to add another set of large triangles and set the whole thing on point again. 

The original has more Paper-piecing and I opt NOT to do that.  The open space would just have a pretty design quilted on it. Choices, Choices!

Friday "Flimsy" Finish

It was a week of hits and misses for me.  I took pictures and read directions but when it came time to lay this quilt out, I turned it wrong every time.  Finally after I got my picture right in my brain it laid out right and went together pretty quick.  I didn't really need all those sashing I cut and sewed together.  All I needed to do was the ones down the right side. I even had to take the sashings off of the top row of the half-blocks to make it the same as the picture in Marti's instructions.

This is the CORRECT way it is suppose to be laid out. I had to take one final picture before I sewed the last parts together. I pinned them to where they went before I took the quilt to the machine.

The Borders are another sad story...

I took the fabric out with me Wednesday to use Lynn's big cutting surface to cut the stripe apart.  DUH, Me -cut between the small White border and the Blue Floral by mistake.  I've sewn them back together and will add a 1/2" to the Inner border to make up for the seam I had to make between the White and Blue. 

The borders are all on and I'm ready to use the New 8 1/2" Miter ruler out at Thread and Bolts.  

I can shout a BIG YAHOOOO!  It's done except for the quilting, basically.

Next UFO to work on is the finishing of the Mariner's Compass for Cassie.  I've been sewing the pinwheels as Leader/ enders and I have almost enough to finish that border.  It was on my UFO Parade Post.

I think it can be finished in good time before the end of the month. (at least to the Flimsy).

It's going to be fun to choose the quilting for this one with all that open space to quilt in. Lynn will be doing it on her Long Arm with Side Saddle for me.

 I'm excited to get to work on the Baby Girl quilts next. 

I also have a secret project to play with it has a deadline to be sent before June 1st.  

Wednesday - What was forgotten??

I'm getting old, I know!  Can I blame it on my Eye?  I forgot to post my Birthday gifts from my Quilt Buddy, Lynn.  I am so blessed that she looks all-over for just the right things to gift me with. I even told her I really don't NEED anymore, I have over 100 Nativities. The Olive wood Nativity set is made in Bethlehem! It's stamped on the bottom.  I love the Nativity Frame too.  I need to find a family photo to put in there. Below is a close up of the ornament she found.  I think it would make a Pretty necklace to wear for the holidays next year. I will get a nice cording or chain to put it on.

Last night was a Lacy Lacers Meeting and Marilee showed us how to make Battenburg lace,  I got the tape basted down and tacked, now I just need to do the spider web between inside the loops. That is my homework until the next meeting. It's fun to learn a new skill, these are going to be a lost art if we don't pass them on.  Most of the Lace Group joined in on the class.  Thanks, Marilee for making up the kits & teaching.

When I got up this morning, I decided I've put off finishing this center of the RR that I'm making for a lady at Church. I hadn't really forgotten it... It's just my Quilter's ADD, lol.  After a bit of "frogging" the center Mariner's Compass is finished.  I can make the Square in a Square and Pinwheel borders pretty fast so the rest of  this quilt won't take too much longer. I was very surprised when I opened my E-mail this week and saw that my Round Robin Quilt is featured on the Home page of the SBS and other Elm Creek Quilts Yahoo group.  It's an honor to have it posted. Click the link to see it there. They are talking in the group about starting another Round Robin.  I had to post that I might be interested IF there is NO Paper-piecing.  I just get so frustrated by it, it's just not fun for me!  I love the precision, but I just have to save my sanity and avoid doing it as much as I can.

Tuesday Ta-Da

 It's been over 6 month's since I got this Round Robin home and on the quilting table.  It came off today after a few more hours of stitching.  I watched my DVR-ed "Hatfields and McCoys" Part one while I quilted.

Here it is laid out on my floor before trimming.  I had to take it out to Lynn's shop to do that with her Big, long rulers and table space.  I found a nice striped fabric to use for the binding while I was out there. Also pictured is a closer up photo of the quilting of the center. I found when I laid it out the main reason to keep track of what was quilted where...I did meander in place of what was in the top part of the white space.  Oh well.  It is DONE and off my Quilting  table.  Now I can switch to my Mega Quilter and play with a bit more space.  YEA!  I'll have my Bernina to stitch and piece with again.  I just have to corner the DH- Paul when he isn't off at the Church to help lift it into place.

New Year's Eve UFO Quiltmashup

Pat Sloan has called all of us to join her on Twitter, Facebook and the Quiltmashup website to finish up a UFO this week-end. SOOOOO.  I donned my MUUMUU and my shells and Kukui nut necklace and posed by the Quiltingtable and machine. Paul took my Picture for me.  Thanks to my Neighbor who brought me this Blue MUUMUU home from her trip in Hawaii.

 This Round Robin Quilt has been on the table since November 14th. It was started with my Yahoo SBS and other Elm Creek Quilts Group in July of 2010. I had a great group!  It helps that we had a good pattern to follow with Jennifer Chiaverini's Book. I think it is high time it got Finished!
Paul says we are staying home for New Year's Eve.  He will go to bed early anyway...so I can maybe get this finished.  This is the top half the row at my tummy is the top of the center section which is an 18" Mariner's Compass. I have about 3/4ths of it left to quilt.

This is how the Top looked when it arrived home last February. I really want something to be stitching on the way to the Crowther New Years Gathering.  Wish Me luck!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012!

Wednesday -11-2-11

Not much Blog- worthy to show this first Wednesday of November. I had a major headache going on most of the day, Tuesday.  I think it's my ear that hurts now. No FUN! I'm still trying to get my Mariner's Compass Round Robin ready to load and be quilted.  Today I was removing more papers that were used on the HST pinwheels. Very flimsy fabric used on this round and one paper had NO FABRIC under it. HUMMMMM

How do I fix that??? EDIT: After un-sewing that corner I saw that the fabric that I thought was missing was there, just not opened up and sewn in.  It's fixed now- Time to Quilt!

ONE MORE WEEK UNTIL THE FINAL RESULTS ARE PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE! Thank you to all who keep VOTING!  I promise this is the last round.  I'm not planning to do anymore challenges next year.

SBS Round Robin -4th Round

I've completed my SBS Round Robin that I have needed to get done with the SBS and Other Elm Creek Quilts Yahoo group. I have it on my UFO list as # 10-A.  Mine came home in February so I was way behind on this one. You can click the link to see it!  I have a displeasure of Paper-piecing and it has kept me stumped and discouraged.  I'm happy with the result in spite of my use of the old 'frogging' tool.  I found some interesting things in doing this 1/4 Mariner's Compass.  That's the reason I like to do the challenges - to learn, right?  If you sew them like this (see 1st Picture)...They don't fit right, but mimic the center of the quilt.

Here is how the quilt looks with the 1/4 Mariner's Compasses attached.  I noticed on the pattern book that we are using by Jennifer Chiaverini that I should have switched the green and gold points to be different than the center. I went and viewed the folder on the SBS Group and saw that I am not the only one who matched the center position of the points.  I am so glad to put this one in the mail. 

SBS Round Robin is HOME

LOOK what was in my mail today? I have been waiting for the next row for me to work on and thought this was it. I wasn't going to open it until I mailed out my last row that I did. Curiousity got to me and I had to see whose RR I got to work on next. I was totally surprised! It's double nice that I have it before I go to the next Book Signing to meet Jennifer Chiaverini again. I can have her sign a corner somewhere. So fun to get her stamp of approval. Janessa is already claiming it. I told her she could have it when I'm dead. But I'm not going anywhere...I should say when I'm done with it... Now I get to decide how to quilt it. The Label is done, it went along with the Round Robin to be signed by those who worked on it.
