5# of Surprise on my Porch

I heard a Thud on the porch this afternoon and ran up to look around. It was too early for the Newspaper. There was a package delivered by UPS from a place in New York State. I didn't remember ordering anything that would be so heavy. My squishie packages are always much lighter. These books are written by Kathy Doughty and Sarah Fielke . Sarah did an interview with Pat Sloan earlier this year [March 22]and I won one of the give-aways. The book was supposed to come from the Publisher. I hadn't received it by August and asked Pat about it so Pat sent me her new book 'Fast Forward Quilts' - autographed with a siggy square. I thought I'd miss out on getting the book "Material Obsession". I am surprised that I got BOTH of the books. That was so nice! I have thanked Pat Sloan once again for the chance to listen to her Radio Show and win prizes. Today she interviewed Jo Morton and Judy Laquidara. I guess today I'm feeling Lucky for sure. I wonder what the mailman will bring the rest of the week... I know what the "weatherman" is bringing...more Quilting weather!

Design Wall Monday- November 29, 2010

I have two sets of Swap Blocks 32 from last years Red, Green and Tan swap with the SBS Group and 27 that I put on the wall last week from the Friendshipswap group. that makes 59 blocks, I might need to make a few more... My question is -could I put them both in the same quilt. Should I put them all on-point? Do I just sew up two quilts? SASHING- that makes even more decisions. What a fun quandry to have- TOO MANY Swap blocks. Then it is closer to the 100 blocks needed for another pin from Elm Creek quilts. I'll be playing with these between snow storms and Ice fog this week and the other 'secret' projects like the Stocking and Ornament Exchange I need to get in the mail by the Dec 1st deadline. I won't show them on here since they are secret... My quilting Table has produced the dilemma of stitching or quilting. I have a stack of 5 quilts waiting to be bound. These are small quilts so I'll practice my binding by machine with them for Charity. Some Lynn will bind since the binding is at her house and they are hers. That is, If and WHEN I get a chance to drive out there with this Wintry weather. I'm still having fun 'doodling' on quilts. I watched a video online of Linda Taylor "doodling" feathers. Last Sunday in November

This is the last Sunday for the Month and I have need to be THANKFUL, one more time! I am thankful for the Memories I have with my children growing up in Mesa, Hermiston, Umatilla, Burbank and Walla Walla. Not all of their childhood memories are happy, I'm sure, but in my memory there are some really good times! I see my children taking on "traditions" we had in our home during the Holidays. The putting up of the Nativity after watching the 1st Presidency Message broadcast from Salt Lake City, Christmas Eve Pajamas, shirts, robes, vests with bowties and dresses, the Candy Cane Bread, the goodie plates, running in the dark to deliver the 12 days of Christmas, the Christmas tree Ornaments, taking pictures of each one by the tree with their gifts. It brings me a BIG lump in my throat! I'm glad we spent the time we did playing games, going to visit family and eating good food. A lot of my memories involve FOOD! Maybe that is because my mother worked in a Restaurant and because she was such a good cook. I have tried to keep memories of my mother and my father alive by talking about them and having pictures of them on the walls of our home. I had to stop making the pilgrimage to the cemetary in Moses Lake on Christmas Eve so that they didn't remember me just crying at Christmas time. I still have my day to weep, and remember that she would have wanted us to be happy when we are together. I make as much of the gifts as possible because of her HOMEMADE gifts that she made for my neices and nephews when I was still at home. Her hands were not idle much of the time. She was always knitting or crocheting something. I see why Grandpa & Grandma Crowther invited us one or two families at a time. She liked her one on one time with each grandchild, she told me once. Now that I'm the Grandma I enjoy the visits from my children with the grandchildren. This grandma house gets small when they are all here. I look forward to having them come again this Christmas...all those who can. We miss those who are too far to travel. My Christmas tree and my heart overflows with JOY from all of the Memories. Many years we don't remember what we got, but I hope we will remember what we gave!

Sledding on Pioneer Hill

Well, Colby can write his paper for Kindergarten now about "What I did on my Thanksgiving Vacation"! Joe called this morning and asked if they could come and sled on our snowy hill in the Park. It's about two blocks from the house so no trecherous roads to go over to get there. They were a little surprised that I would go. I told them somebody has to take the pictures! I took both of our cameras so I could take VIDEO too. The hill was well-run by the time we got there. Lots of kiddos enjoying the freshly fallen snow. It snowed big fluffy flakes most of today and wasn't TOO cold for us. My fingers did freeze with only the cheapo gloves I wore. Sam looked like a big marshmellow in his snow pants and coat. The smiles on their faces were so priceless as they came down each time. Here is Joe, Sam, Colby and Grandpa Crowther at the top of the hill. Joe and Kori brought two saucers to use. Sam pointed up the hill everytime after they stopped. He loved it. Kori didn't mind it 'all toasty' in her new snow boots and snow pants. She even tried pulling Sam up the hill on the saucer. He fell off soon after I took this next picture. Paul took a video of me going down the other side of the hill. I only went down once, that was enough. He turned the camera sideways, sorry he's not a Techie! The Frazier family from our Ward came to sled two with their two cute children! Sophie rode one of Joe's sled's down the short side with her mom. She had just been sliding on her snow pants without a sled. We came home and ate the Ham and Baked potatoes I had prepared earlier in the day. I think Colby and Sam liked them. I'm glad they took time to come and visit the 'old folks'. I had to add this cute video of Joe and his boys.

A Good "Squishie" Mail week

With all the snow and cold we've still gotten our mail. THANKS, Mr Mailman! In my e-mail I learned that I'd won a FREE copy of the Volume 2 Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks magazine from Morning Glory Designs on the Blog Tour. See, here it is... autographed by Reeze Hanson of Morning Glory Designs

AND... the mail today brought our Christmas Star blocks home. 26 blocks plus one I didn't send in. All ready to be made into a Sylvia's Christmas quilt. These are from the Friendship Block swap group Lynn and I joined. It's fun to swap blocks with other Elm Creek Book fans from all over the US and Canada and some from the UK. so guess what will be on my Design wall post this week. Maybe I'll sew some together to change them a little.

The first of 14 packages of Fat Quarters arrived the other day too. So the Mailman is my friend this week. Deadline for the ladies to send the FQ packages to me is December 20th.

2010 Thanksgiving

I said I wasn't going to 'cook' today, but Janessa made me do it! She made the Yummy Rolls like I usually make and asked if she should halve the recipe. I told her what to do with the extra dough- make cinnamon rolls. She did and I had to make some since they looked so good! YUMMY with Cinnamon, brown sugar, raisins, nuts and Cream Cheese frosting. Having snow all around this week didn't help my BIG plans to run away. Here is how Paul spent most of his day... are you surprised- boys? I think there was football on, too. No Turkey Bowl for him with no boys home to go with him. I'm not sure they had it. There was a "Turkey Trot" in town however. And here I am talking to Janessa who called to wish us Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Anniversary again. We also received calls from Brant, Milton and I chatted with Kori on FB. I'm glad everyone was safe this Thanksgiving. We called Paul's parents who had planned to drive to Hermiston, they went to Basin City instead. We had several invites from friends and Ward members to come for Thanksgiving Dinner. I'm thankful for all who invited us! We have 2 pies in the refrigerator and some leftovers from our dinner our fellow empty nester, change of plan because of snow friends. Thanks you so much Marilee and Galen for your good company today! I meant to take a picture of them and have them take one of us, but didn't do it. tomorrow is the Craziest Shopping Day of the year. My husband says he wants to go out looking... Some days you have to be careful what you ask for. He is changing everyday and I don't really mind. He usually waits until Christmas Eve to go shopping. My gift is already purchased so we can concentrate on what to buy for 14 grandchildren that will be useful and fun...is there such a thing that their parents aren't already buying for them? That is why I like to do the Homemade Christmas, no returns at the store necessary. So... 30 days until Christmas and if we find that special gift for 14-27 of the family tomorrow, I will have a stress-free Christmas this year. I'm all for that. Whoever is able to come will be well-fed- I'm cooking for Christmas!

...still snowing

It's not even Thanksgiving day yet and we have almost 7" of the white stuff! I had to go out and test my new EDGE ruler again today. After I swept and shoveled the walk again so the mailman would be able to deliver me fun stuff. Today not so fun, but I know some is coming... Here is my back yard, doesn't it look like I have a Christmas Tree already decorated? If this keeps up we won't feel bad about not going anywhere for our Anniversary. Yesterday Paul said he had to drive 35 MPH all the way home from work in Wallula. My son, Brant laughed at me on Sunday when I complained about the snowy week ahead. I know I have plenty to do with Christmas coming next month. I just might get some things done! It is pretty to look out and see all the un-touched snow. But when the thermometer dips below freezing, I want it to go away quick and only come back for the morning of Christmas Day. It's hard to be "THANKFUL" when I want to go shopping the day after Thanksgiving and this will definitely make that hard to do. NaDell asked when it last snowed before Thanksgiving and I haven't seen too many times that it has in looking through the photo albums. It's nice having them accessible again. Maybe I'll get some Scrapbooking done too. I can dream can't I??? There are a few years all sorted and it wouldn't take much to work on them. I have sorely neglected them since I started in earnest my Quilting habit. I still take pictures and print them. They just aren't in the books yet. Blogging years will be easy because I won't need the calendar to remember 'events'.

In Remembrance

I attended the services for my former Guild Co-Chair and the 3rd Walla Walla Valley Guild member in as many years to pass from this life. It's not fun to go to services for your friends, but we do it because we loved them. She was only 51 and had endured the past 3 years with her Brain Cancer. She underwent her 1st Brain surgery around Thanksgiving time and had hoped to live through the Holidays that year. She told me of her fear of leaving her children who she loved very much and her husband. Tim was by her side all the way. He selflessly brought her to Guild in her wheelchair and I admire him for the loving way he attended to her needs. He knew how much it meant to her to come. A few months ago I went with my Quilting Buddy, Lynn to visit her and took her the "Heart and Flowers" Quilt made by the Guild. Lynn took the picture of her with her special Quilt. She was nearly speechless but kept saying, "Pretty" as she stroked the patches in the quilt. I went again by myself to take her the picture we had taken of her with her quilt. I felt I wanted to go and see her again as I had promised. I'm so glad I did. I remember serving the guild with her and going on an early Saturday to one of the Habitat for Humanity houses that was being presented to a family. Today the services were held at the Mortuary on a very snowy day. The Chaplain read letters from her Husband and her Mother. They mentioned her love of 'lighthouses'. She was a light to her family and to her friends. Her brother spoke of his sister and how the holidays won't be the same without her. How grateful they are for the time they had with her. The slideshow was well done and I'll remember her always smiling. Thank you, Tim for sharing her with us.

Design Wall Monday- November 22,2010

The weather outside is 'frightful' but I have plenty to do in my quilting zone. My wall hasn't changed much. This is the 4th round of this Round Robin. I didn't make the center, it belongs to a fellow SBS quilter. I finished the pinwheels and am re-arranging them until I decide how they look best. I had to tilt the camera to get this picture. I got a "cheater" quilt- quilted and a charity practice quilt loaded and ready to stitch this week. Using the patterns and stylus. The spacing is what I need to practice on. Sunday Musings

I didn't take pictures of all that I wanted to BLOG today so I'm just thinking as I type this morning.

It's been a good week for the most part. I got to do a bit of sewing/quilting, went out to Lunch with my Visiting Teachers and finally got out to see the two ladies I'm assigned to Visit Teach. It's been way too long. The message this month is taken from the GENERAL CONFERENCE issue of the Ensign. I gave the same message that my VT gave to me. President Monson always has a good story to tell. My VT; Karen's favorite quote and mine... "My brothers and sisters, to express gratitude is gracious and honorable, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live with gratitude ever in our hearts is to touch heaven."

The song "Home can be a Part of Heaven" comes to my mind. Every Tuesday I post something I'm grateful for on Richard Paul Evans Facebook page. He calls it "Grati-Tuesday". I need to be more "Grateful" for all that I do have to enjoy in my life. Good family and friends. Hopefully my family are also my 'friends'. Yesterday I had the fun of sharing a part of our Ward family with NaDell, Andy and their children. When I arrived with my pie that Paul told me to make, they were there pitching in to help. They get that from their parents. My children got it from their Father. Here is the Kitchen crew getting our WARD THANKSGIVING DINNER ready. This was the "Thanksgiving" for US this Year. Our Children are scattered to the four winds and eating Turkey with other family this year. I opted to NOT cook an extra Thanksgiving Dinner this year so everybody could come. Since not everybody can come. Sorry guys. I invited the close ones to come to our WARD dinner, but only NaDell and Andy came. She had a gift for the OLD married folks that she wanted to give us before Thursday. THANKS for remembering the date. It was a 'Snowy Morning' back in 1976. I don't remember much about the day, it's kind of a BLUR... I do remember someone bringing Paul in to take me to see the snow falling on the Temple early that morning before we went to be sealed. I'm grateful for the Leavitt's letting my family stay there. They had a beautiful view of the Temple from their home. All of my Brothers and Sisters were there except Selwyn. It was Thanksgiving Day in USA so they had the day off. My Grandmother - Mary Waite was there. My Mother pointed to the empty chairs and told me my grandfathers were there too. I can't imagine them not coming to witness our sealing. My mother had purchased a Large sized Print of the Cardston Temple with green grass all around like it was on the day before. She had to go and trade it for the Snowy one. We displayed it at the Reception. It hangs above our bed with our License signed by both of our Fathers and the Temple President; Elmo E. Fletcher. There is one thing I remember of what the Temple President told us. He said it was a 100/100 not a 50/50 agreement with our marriage. We are to give 100%, not just 50%. GOOD ADVICE! We drove our CHEVY NOVA home that night in a BLIZZARD with Nathan and my Sister-in-law; Debbie. My parents rode with Paul's in their FORD LTD. Our wedding dinner was Burger King. No exotic Honeymoon for us. We chose not to go away and spend the extra money. We bought our fridge with part of the money we were going to spend on a bigger diamond ring. Paul has always been the sensible one. He appreciates the "useful" gifts. It's 34 years and counting...I love him more than I did that day, just like my Mother told me I would.

Not bad for starters...

Since Saturday when I got the first quilt loaded on my new TOY... 3 small Quilts have been completed. One is even Bound by machine! That was a first for my efforts lately. Paul saw the stack of two when he came home the other day and asked if they were 'bound' too. So I'll have to keep up on the Binding. It would be nice to have a stack to do on road trips though. Can you see that these are all done as the D9P(Disappearing 9-Patch) pattern? The Blue one I bought 9 FQ's in Utah and made at Ellen's house to show her the Fast, Easy Pattern. The FQ's were $1 each so this is my $9 quilt top.

The first one is free-motion, the second was shown on the Design Wall Monday BLOG. I think the TOY needs a good NAME, any Suggestions??? I went out to Sew at Lynn's and brought home some more Practice quilts. She has made several for the Charity at Guild and they just need to be quilted. I have more than enough to practice with now. 8 odd sized baby quilts. We put together Tops and backs for about a dozen total. She also sent me home with some Mylar Templates to try out with the Stylus. This is what the sky looked like as I drove home. Purple Mountain Majesty!! The only thing bad about having a Quilting table set up here at home is...ALL I want to do is keep it loaded and going. It's cutting into my TV and Computer time. HAHAHA. Time to go sew up some more quilts. I need LOTS more practice. I just will have to remind people that their eyes are closed when they sleep under my quilts, so perfection isn't required.

Design Wall Monday - November 15, 2010

It's Monday again. I didn't sew as much as I thought when it comes time to put up my DESIGN WALL Monday, I had to scratch my head. I went to sew on Tuesday and Lynn thought some of my colors weren't quite right. I found some other colors on the shelves at "Threadandbolts" that looked better with the Center of the Mariner's compass. I had to just pin them up since I haven't had time to cut them and get them made into the HST's. I had Guild so I got my pink and yellow/gold Pinwheel parts trimmed, they just need pressing and put into the pinwheels. This is the reason I haven't sewn too much. I got my Anniversary/Christmas/Birthday present early. It took a night to make room downstairs for it to be set-up. It is fun, but I have to get used to the starting and stopping with the switch. The Table works with my favorite Bernina that I already own. It has templates that make 8 different patterns. See the design in the picture. I'm practicing on baby sized quilts. Grand baby #17 is going to be a boy so this one could be for him. Today we find out if Grandbaby #16 is Pink or Blue... Hope you have time to play with your quilts more than I did last week. Fall Fiesta

Olivia Called the other day and invited me to be her guest at the "Fall Fiesta". I was driving and had to pull off the road to talk to her. I asked her what time is was and who else was coming? She sweetly told me that her mom was coming.

I have to say that it really made my day. She sang all the songs and knew all the actions. Here she is cutting out the parts for making a tree out of the Footprint of her MOM, the Hand prints of Grandma and her handprints. She took me around and showed me the things they have learned about FALL.

This picture with the leaves she gathered from her yard at home and made an animal. Can you tell what it is? It has a tail and four legs and says BAAAA... The Kindergarten class at her school does this every Year. Vincent showed me how he could Jump. Of course this reminds me of when I was in Umatilla and involved in the PTA. NaDell was busy helping the Teachers when I got there. She had to remind me to check-in at the Office. I am glad she is involved in her Children's School PTA. And because she asked me to tell stories for my Sunday Posts... Here we are in 1993. It was in November and we were all "INVITED" to Grandma Crowther's house. We lived in Burbank at the time. We are mostly in our Sunday Best. When we lived in Mesa, Milton on the way home from Church in Connell always asked..."are we invited?" She would make a Pot Roast with Potatoes and Carrots for Sunday Dinner. Food always tasted better at Grandpa and Grandma Crowther's house. We used to gather at our house in Burbank on Sunday Evenings for some games and 'poppycock' Popcorn. Since we moved to Walla Walla, we don't get to see the family every Sunday. We miss those times. I'm sad that my family has out-grown my house and we can't all gather here. We have gathered with the Crowther's at the Church for Thanksgiving. This year Paul and I are Celebrating our Anniversary that day and I'm not cooking. Our Ward Thanksgiving dinner is this coming week-end. Dad is cooking one of the Turkeys. So if my any of our Children and their familes want to join us there, Come on over... I know how nice it is to be INVITED!

To Quilt or Not to Quilt, Duh...

That's what my t-shirt says... I have no excuses for 5' and under UFO's now. This table adjusts from 5' to a 10' table. I only had room for it to be at the 5' length in my basement. I won't be able to do the BIG quilts but smaller ones like all the baby quilts I need to finish will work just fine with this set-up. Here is the "Bernina Santa" with his RED sleigh and trusty "Elf" helper. It took a bit of dis-assembling to get it down stairs. Just a 1/2" wrench and an allen wrench does the job. I am a Happy Camper!

100 Quilt Blocks - Volume 2- etc, etc

I did the Blog hop and didn't win a copy of this Magazine, so I had to buy it when I saw it! It has some pretty blocks in it again this year. Kathy, a fellow Blogger made a quilt using these blocks for her own Block of the Month last year. Since making/finishing my SBS and Marti Michell quilts this year, I've been trying to get more UFO's done and have been fairly successful thanks to the generousity of my quilt buddy. With Winter coming on the roads will inhibit my travels to and from her house so... I begged and begged and finally am getting the Bernina Quilting Table. This is for my anniversary that is coming up on Thanksgiving Day, my Christmas and Birthday all wrapped up into one! Lucky that my Anniversary is first so I get it NOW! It necessitated a lot of re-arranging of 'stuff'. See the BIG wooden cabinet on the Right? That is it! Bigger than a breadbox and made to fit all of my Creative Memories Photo Albums. Putting it upstairs meant the Senior pictures had to move... so they are in the picture too. When Paul got up this morning after helping dis-assemble his Christmas gift from a few years ago and re-assemble it upstairs last night. He said I was "amazing". I can clear space if I want something bad enough. Dewey and Janean made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I'm still waiting for the Bernina "Santa" to deliver it this morning. It wouldn't fit in my car yesterday. More pictures to come.

Fun Stuff at Retreat

Sonya plans a lot of fun things for the "Royal Ridges" Retreats. She does one in May and November. As I said I had a lot of FUN! Part of the fun was understanding the different swaps and Lottos. I was so confused before we left, and had a chance to correct the boo-boos before the strip swaps. When we would go out and come back to the sewing room there were little surprises by our stations. She also passed around baskets of FQ's and drew names randomly for little gifties. I had a "Fairy Frost" angel that left a few FQ's at my place on the last evening. I'd been looking for the gold FF to do the 'Gold' ring Bauble on my 12 days Wall hanging. I didn't win the Fairy Frost Lotto. :( Pictured are the treasures I brought home including the Gift from the "Greedy Gift Exchange", it is on the left, 3 cute tins with a piece of fabric with quilty sayings on it. The Pilgrim scarecrow is a bell.

We played BINGO, too, it was fun to make these 25 block squares of Fall prints. Marilee got to bring them home to make a Charity Quilt.Marilee saw the pony outside the sewing room and had to go and pet and visit with her. She was born this past April. She (Echo, the Pony) posed when I asked her to look at the camera.Another Fun thing was having Judy D come and visit. She usually is there to help Sonya. I had to get a picture with her. She and I follow each other's Design Wall Monday Blogs with Judy L. her Husband had surgery so she didn't get to come and play with us, just came for a short visit. The Best part of this Retreat is that we ALL eat together and the caretaker makes all the yummy food. I didn't have to decide when or what to eat for Four days! It was a steep hike up to the sewing room, but I made it with the help of my Hiking boots. It didn't rain until Saturday so the hiking was pretty easy. I look forward to going again. I'm not sure about 2011, but 2012 I definitely have it in my plans.

On the way home Marilee took me to see the Maryhill Museum and Stonehenge. I am very small in comparison to the pillars.

Design Wall Monday - November 8, 2010

I hung my Flannel up over the curtain by the pressing station at the Retreat for my Design Wall. I changed it at least 3 times so there are 3 projects that have progressed. The first one is shown on the cutting mat. My Buggy Barn Stars. They were on the wall a few weeks ago, after the Quilt Show where the "Buggy Barn" was the Featured well-known/not local Quilters. Only the one in the left corner is trimmed to size. I had to do a bit of frogging to get them to this point. I think I need another lesson for stacking and shuffling the stack. This is my 12 Days of Christmas Mystery that I showed last week. I'm auditioning the 'background'. I did get some "baubles" made. They all need the hand blanket stitching still. I am seeing that they look in the opposite direction of the pattern though. I guess I have to be different... The lady in Australia is adding more to the borders. You can see them on her Blog. Lastly- my next Round Robin to work on arrived just in time to take with me. I looked for fabrics to go with it and made a few Pinwheels while I was there and put them up with it. I think I will have to shop the stash a bit more before I finish this round. I have until January to send it off. If I'd had my Eleanor Burns HST ruler with me I might have worked on them more. "Royal Ridges" Quilt Retreat -part 1

I've had the most fun at a Retreat than I'd ever imagined. I took several projects and touched each one at least long enough to decide I wouldn't be working on it... Marilee was kind enough to invite me to her "favorite" Retreat at "Royal Ridges". It is a bit far and takes a day to get there with multiple stops. We left Thursday before it was light and drove toward Portland. The ride in her new 'toy' car was smooth and the music and conversation was fun too. After our first Retreat at Leavenworth, she called me "Chatty Cathy". I hope I've learned to listen a little more than I talk. She asked if I'd ever stopped at the Bonneville Dam to see the fish runs and the process of collecting the eggs and sperm from the fish. "No" I said and she pulled in to show me the biggest sturgeon! His name is "Herman". I've seen them at McNary Dam, that was a few years ago. We saw the Rainbow trout jumping and trying in vain to get through the barriers. My camera has a delay and it took several times (17) to get the shot of one of them in the air.

Here is the sign with a Definition of my Neice; Natalie's married Name- very similar to our last name...Had to take the picture of the sign by the fish ladders. Too bad after they try to jump, they are stunned and taken in for the harvesting and their impending doom... No pictures taken of that. The visual in my head might never go away. Thanks Marilee, I never knew what I was missing...

We had to stop at a Fabric store since we were in the area, right? We needed to get a few more items on the list for the FQ Swaps and Lottos to be played at the Retreat. Here is the cabin where we slept. Each one is named - ours was "Faith"

This is where I put my SBS quilt to sleep the first night. On the top bunk, I thought I would sleep better up there. I forgot that I'm getting older and if I needed to get up in the night that might be inconvenient. I know TMI! Needless to say I moved it down for the 2nd night. Sonya requested I bring my SBS for "Show and Tell". That wasn't until Saturday night though.

Before we left Sunday Morning to come home I requested a group Picture. They kindly obliged. Thanks for a great Retreat! There's more to tell but it will have to wait. Back to the real world and my own Bed!
