Design Wall Monday 9-27-2010

The results of my busy, busy week is I now have 3 quilts to Bind! The "Bouquet of Friendship has the White binding sewn on and just needs me to take a Road trip or have a TV night to relax, sit and stitch it down. I sewed the Hanging sleeve into the binding so it is ready to hang for Pictures. I have to find the right Red or Blue to bind the Red, White and Blue 'Pointless Star' quilt. I used Fat quarters to make it and there wasn't much leftover. To see the full quilts click Here.
Below is the 3rd quilt I quilted on the Long Arm last week. It is my Row Robin from my Online WASIQ group. I think I'll use the green to bind it. Unless I can find enough of the floral that is in the final border. I am ready for a week without climbing under the Longarm. My back aches from doing 3 in one week. After I came home and told my husband I'd finished the "Bouquet of Friendship" quilt finally, he asked, "So you're done quilting?" Funny Man...he has no clue how many UFO's I have still to finish in my lifetime. I never did get my Buggy Barn Stars cut last week, I needed to get the 60m Olfa Cutter first. I have it now and will try and have some of those blocks to show soon.

I Miss my Kids

Can I turn back the clock, please?? Momma has the blues. This week I kept busy, but once I stopped, I realized that I'm really sad! My quilts can't always make me happy. My heart aches to see the children and Grandchildren who live FAR-AWAY. I've even checked out Aliegant and Delta for flight plans. I can't just Fly away, it's no fun by myself. Maybe it withdrawals from having the Goodson family home last week-end and all the festivities that were so overwhelming. We made it through that busy week-end and it was fun to go back to Connell and see their Primary Program. It brought back so many memories of the past Primary Presentations. So many of the songs were from the way-back machine, I remember Milton and Joe singing "We are as the Armies of Helaman" and NaDell, Brant, Jeff and Janessa singing " I Belong to the Church of Jesus Christ" and "A Child's Prayer". I think I'd better invest in more kleenex when our Primary sings in late October.
On Tuesday I came home and looked at the Date on the Computer and realized I hadn't thought about my Dad all day. He would have been 97 this year. I had to call my sister and see if she remembered. I'm happy to know I will see him again and am willing to wait for that wonderful day. "Families can be Together Forever" just like the song says. The house is still empty when they have all moved far away though.

Gotta show

The "Bouquet of Friendship" is DONE!!!! It took a while but after turning the quilt around 4 times and floating it so I could quilt these beautiful feathers in the 'white' space...Yea my word of the year still in effect. It still feels great to say it~ DONE!!!
Lynn and I sent our Quilts to Portland for "Trends". We had to wait until after the Quilt Festival and it was WAY cheaper to send them UPS than to take a road trip this week. I sent my "Ring Around the Rosy" and "Aloha D9P" to show off the pretty fabrics we bought and ordered when we went last to Trends in March.
I FINALLY got to quilt this one this week. It's only waited a few (5-6) years. The pattern is Pointless Stars. I think I made it for Jeffery when he was still in High School. I quilted stars all over. See how nice they look on the backing. The backing is a BATIK, I bought this by mistake, I'm sure. But it looked too good with the top to give away to someone who LOVES Batik fabric... So 2 more UFO's off the list. "DONE"

Design Wall Monday August 20, 2010

This morning, my brain said, "You gotta use those Pat Sloan 'Sweet Liberty' FQ's and make some Buggy Barn 'Crazy Stars'!" So... I found my bag from "Quiltmania", (a quilt store in Richland) and layered them up, traced the Star onto Freezer paper and even found a few extra USA fabrics to to go with it. Now I need a Bigger Rotary cutter and maybe two more colors and I'm ready to go. I added the stripe so I could have some "casually off-grain" pieces in there, to remember the Buggy Barn ladies at the Quilt Show this past week-end. Here they are ~~~ Janet and Pam posing for me at the Walla Walla Valley Quilt Festival.
Now I just have to go and get my post linked to Judy L's for DWM. Click and check out all the fun quilty walls and leave them a comment too....

Wild Week-end

My Dear #1 Daughter said last week I should write a Family History type Blog every Sunday! There was NO TIME for any of that this week-end... so how about a late Sunday BLOG??! As the week started, I knew that it would be BUSY, BUSY! It was Daughter of Utah Pioneers on Monday, Quilt Guild on Tuesday, Wednesday I quilted on the Long arm for a while, I think, it's all a blur now... Thursday was Quilt Show set-up time then Janessa, Jes and Jackson flew in from AZ for the week-end festivities. Janessa and Jackson came for her early B-day Dinner of Hamburger Casserole and the Family favorite Chili Sauce. I'd put it in the crock pot earlier in the day and it was piping hot. Jackson says "cheese".
She brought her dress for me to adjust for the wedding. It was a fairly easy fix. Friday, I went to the Quilt show and got my oil changed and a new serpentine belt put on the Lumina. Thanks Jerry! It was good I had it checked before taking off to go with NaDell for her ultra-sound. Thinking Pink has worked so far... NaDell and Andy will have a new daughter to love next year. I won't cry a bit if we get 3 granddaughters next year. It was fun to go to the Quilt show and have time to visit with the Featured Quilters from the Buggy Barn. They were kind and signed some 'siggy' squares for Lynn and I. I have one of their "Crazy" Books already and was glad to see the demo they showing their method of stacking and shuffling the fat quarters to make their quilt patterns. The 'Best of the WEST' BBQ was the vendor for Food at the Quilt Show again this year so we had the Pulled Pork sandwiches there for a late lunch. Too many beautiful quilts to look at and take pictures of... I kept seeing a couple of ladies wearing the same Quilty T-shirt I was wearing and had to get a picture with them. Saturday Morning I worked at the Welcome Table with Betty and Julia. We were very busy and the 3 hours passed by really fast. A guild member who I've known since the first time I went to Guild was also working on Saturday so I got a picture taken with her too. They are all in the slide show... plus pictures of the Hearts and Flowers quilt Lynn and I delivered this week to my former Co-chair of the Guild.
Here is the Goodson Family all dressed up for Alyse and Dalton's wedding.
Paul was the Officiant. I had to take the picture of him walking back down the aisle with our grandson, the ring bearer...so handsome!
Then we went to help Colby celebrate his 6th birthday, stopping to pick up Milton and Christen's children to join the fun. We slept at NaDell and Andy's Saturday night then got up early drive to Connell to attend Church with Grandma and Grandpa Crowther. It was their Primary Program and I was happy we got to be there for that! One of the best Sundays of the year when the children sing and recite. We missed the Linger Longer in our Ward though...
This is Janessa with her friends from Richland and Burbank and their children. It's been a while for them to be together. Had to take their picture! I'm so glad for all who came to visit today at NaDell and Andy's. Especially the surprise ones who dropped by for a short visit. It's heart-warming to know that my children love each other enough to make time to come and see their baby sister while she was here.

Design Wall Monday 9-13-10

It's Monday Design Wall time again. I have been busy getting entries for the Walla Walla Quilt show ready. Friday, I spent a few hours making sure the paperwork was done and extra labels attached as directed.
Then I went to Lynn's and helped her get her entries taken down to the Local Quilt shop before the mad rush on Saturday. Here she is with her rolling tote full of quilts...
I put my version of the "Bouquet of Friendship" in the Longarm hoping to finish it and have it in the show this coming week-end.
It was not meant to be...Sunday when I got home from church the answering machine was blinking. Message said there were a lot of BIG quilts and my entry was not going to be shown this year. That relieves my stress level on getting it done. So I have a Design Longarm this week to show you the fun I am having quilting on this quilt. I like the Loopy design of the border. It is from a set of pattterns called "Kitty and Daisies" by Donna Kleinke. In the Friendship blocks I put a design of a feathered wreath from Munnich designsIn the white space of the Triangles is a design (FE0070) I can't remember who designed it, I will update after I go out to quilt today. It is "Betty's Feather" I want to give credit where it is due.

I am still looking for how to quilt the big white trapiziod with the computer driver that is on here.

Go to Judy L's Blog and see the other Design Walls- it's so fun to get inspired...

My Grandparents ~ Waite /Brown

It's "Grandparents Day" I can't let the day go without remembering mine. I wouldn't be the Grandma I am without them. Here is my Mom's family back in 1968. My Mom is the one right behind Grandpa. She said she was "daddy's girl". That is how I remember my Grandpa Waite- In his overalls and his twinkling smile. He loved his family and I will never forget ~he was my "hero" when he killed the 'Banty' rooster for me. The old Banty had me trapped against the closed screen door at the dairy farm in Star, Idaho. I was screaming because he had jumped up and clawed my chest and pecked at my eye. Grandpa came running across the bridge to the dairy barn and grabbed that rooster and slung it on the stump, chopped off his head and then swung it around above his head by the neck and off it flew into the gully.
When I see this picture, it reminds me of the days I spent under the quilting frames in Moses Lake. There was always a quilt on when Grandma Waite came to visit. I remember in my teens how she would stand in the doorway to my room and talk to me late into the night. She always had good advice for me and told me to not chase the boys. She said, "Run, til they catch you." When she met Paul, she said, "He's a 'peach' of a guy!" She lived to be 97 and was a widow for 29 years. She told me how she wondered if grandpa still wanted her and I told her we still needed her so grandpa let her stay here for us. Here she is quilting with my sister in law; Sheila in Grand Coulee. I wonder who got that cute clown quilt???This is the picture taken in 1977 at Hilgard Park. We had a Waite family Reunion there when I was about to pop with my eldest child. Pictured is my Grandma waite with her "girls". My mom is the one in the red pantsuit. After this reunion we had "Ira Waite Reunions" in Glenwood, Swan Valley and of couse in Nampa. Grandma always gathered the great-grandchildren to share her Testimony. She was a living Testimony of love! I'm proud to be her namesake. I never knew my Grandma Brown. She died the February before I was born. I have heard stories all my life about her and her "English" ways. How she filled each plate at the table and as they passed them around, you took what you got and didn't complain. She did fine embriodery and crocheted. My middle name came from her. This is one of the pictures I see when I think about my Grandpa Brown. He was blind, but got around well with his cane. He was also diabetic and would give me money to go to the 'little store' in our neighborhood and buy him "chicken bones". He taught me honesty. Whe he would give me money from his wallet he knew which denomination he had given me. He would feel the edges of the coins to tell which was a dime or a nickel or a penny. I could never trick him. I think my mom put the bills in a certain order in his wallet for him, or folded the corner down so he knew which one was which. I also remember that we had a Cuckoo clock so he knew what time it was. he would sit in the 'red' rocking chair next to the canary cage and whistle. He would listen to his records of the scriptures and tell stories to anyone around. I have some reel to reel tapes of some of those stories from his Mission in England and how he met "Flossie" there and sent for her after he got back home to Utah. He would tell us he had to be home in the Winter, just in case "Flossie" was coming to take him to Heaven with her. He died peacefully one day after getting up and having his breakfast. He told Uncle Art and Aunt Fern he was tired and went to lie down.
I love and miss all of my grandparents and try to live my life so they can look down from heaven and say, "That's my girl."

In the mail

I got this in the mail last week but was so busy with Fair and everything I have had to wait until now to post about it. I won the drawing on Pat Sloan's BLOG last Spring for a book by Sarah Feilke. It was suppposed to arrive straight from the publishers. I've waited and waited until I thought I'd better let Pat know that it never came. She was kind enought to send me her new book and two flyers from her fabric lines of "Georgia" and "Sweet Liberty". I asked her for a siggy square and she sent one inside the book by where she had autographed. I found a piece of the "Sweet Liberty" fabric so I put the corners on today. My stack of Signed squares is growing. We have the "Buggy Barn" ladies coming to our Quilt Festival in about 10 days. My project is almost done and I have filled out all the paperwork. This year I'll not hide my Claim slips so I don't have any hassle getting my quilts back. Thanks to my 'secret pal' giving me the big bag, I have the perfect place to put them. I 'heart' my Secret Pal from last year. This year has been pretty nice too.

Design Wall Monday 9-6-10

I've been stalling on this round since it isn't due to be mailed until October. The colors I need are not just pinks, but those are what I have done so far. I'm still looking for the right blue and green to go in the squares on point with these pinks. I thought if I got it on the wall it would help me figure it out this week. Deadlines loom for challenges I can't show so this is what I have to show this week~ a WIP or 'work-in-progress'.
The way the border is sewn on the diagonal is new to me. I like the puzzlement and see I have one corner turned wrong already. Next stop for this Round Robin once I finish my round is Colorado. Check out the other Design walls at Judy L's Blog this week.

More Fair Days

The Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days are nearly over for another year. I thought I'd put some more of the events in my post so I can remember. Wednesday was the Free until 3 Day and I blogged about it pretty much last time.
Thursday, Paul came home and had nothing on his agenda so off we went to see the Fair. I had one free pass from my entries that I used that night and only had to pay for Paul's entry. We saw most of the sights and a few friends too. He didn't make me go in the 'stinky' barns this year. We got some Caramel and regular Kettle corn and ate it while we listened to the Copius Notes.
I volunteered to sit at the Photo section in the Pavilion on Friday so I got another Free pass to the Fair that day. It was fun to see all the people and hear the comments about the pictures and Quilts. I met Corey Hewitt who is the Manager of our Fair. I have volunteeered to take over for the lady who is retiring as the Quilt and Needlework Superintendant. AM I CRAZY? Several people asked which quilts were mine and I got to show them. I took a better picture of the "Best of Show" Quilt.
I forgot to have Paul take my picture with my quilts on Thursday...
Saturday, Paul had to work and I thought I'd just hang around the house and do my chili sauce again. I thought the smell might be harder to have linger in the house with Fast Sunday so that will wait for the real "Labor" Day. I ended up at the Fair with Lynn who was smart and bought an all days pass. We went up to see the bobbin lace ladies and give Marilee the Bobbin lace Tree ornament she made last year.
Lynn wanted to take some more pictures of the "Old Quilt". We visited with some people who stopped to see the display and used Lynn's camera since I didn't have mine.
We stopped to talk to Mrs Tom, who helped me volunteer yesterday and she asked if I'd left my camera in the Photo area? I had thought about uploading them earlier Saturday and getting the prints made, but the camera wasn't in my purse when I got to Rite Aid. She asked what kind of Camera I had and I told her 'Olympus'. She reached under the table and pulled out my camera. I'm so glad I got to go back to the Fair on Saturday or who knows what would have happened to all the pictures I haven't uploaded yet. I think I'm losing my mind...(no comments needed about that!)
Tonight I get to go and see how the Take down goes and get my quilts and Photos. I'll be there again in the morning to learn more about what all my new volunteer job will be. It will be fun... to see the workings of the Fair in the back ground. A new adventure for me.

WW FAIR & Ribbons

I had a quick look around the Pavilion at the Fair this morning between errands and the Memorial. I got 3 Blue Ribbons and 2 reds on my quilts. The Photos were judged with 1 red and 1 white. Coy hanging out at the Park got a Red, and the Scenic one got a 3rd place ribbon. I had time to take pictures while I was waiting for Lynn to come meet me. Lynn got Blue ribbons on all of her Quilt Entries. First is my ALOHA quilt- A BLUE Ribbon!

Lynn's "Batik" Marti Mitchell is hanging next to mine. Next to that is the "Best of Show" Quilt by a lady we know from Dayton. Appliqued Tulips and echo quilting. [The wrong name was put on it yesterday so this is a correction.]

A Blue Ribbon on the "Roses" quilt. Lynn's 1/2 Yard Challenge Quilt is on the left of the Roses one. Here's a Red on the 1/2 Yard Challenge Quilt(blue and yellow) and a Blue on my "Crayon" Wall Quilt from Last year's Quilt Show Challenge. The Spool's Quilt got a Red and they hung it sideways.

Here is the "OLDEST" quilt at the Fair this year. It is one of Jerry, Lynn's husband's Family treasures. Jerry built the frame with Plexiglass so both sides can be seen and the quilt is preserved and documented. The story of how they got it is fun and unsual. Back of the Quilt. It is dated from the Newspapers the fabric was hand-stitched to. This is a pattern from 1897 and was made from 1898-1900. It's called by many different names. Rocky Road to Kansas, Kite & String are a few mentioned in Eleanor Burn's "Egg Money Quilts" book. The papers show the prices of things from that time in Louisville, Kentucky. Very interesting history in itself! It was recovered from the Trash and given to Jerry last month in a garbage bag. It really shows how when a Quilter dies, that her quilts lose value to those left behind...how sad!
