Pilgramage

I stated in my post last Thurday HERE about the upcoming week-end that I wasn't planning to make the annual "pilgramage" to the Cemetary.  I knew that we would go to visit Paul's Parents, which we did, but the other plans got changed along the way.  My Eldest Brother spent a couple of days in the Hospital last week so my (dear hubby) DH called on Sunday and arranged for us to go and visit him early Monday morning.  Well, we had to get up early to get there...
He was ready and waiting to go for a ride so we went to pick up the flag and rose to put in the Bouquet for Mom and Dad's grave.  When we got to the Cemetary, it took a while, as usual, to remove the 'vase' part that is embedded in the headstone.  Paul and Allan used the tools that my Brother just happend to have in his pockets and got it out.  It was wedged in with dirt and grass clippings. It wasn't the only one found that way.
Once it was turned up to hold the flowers we put them in and waited for Roma and Gordon to come.  We walked and found the headstone of Aunt Caroline and others that we miss, old neighbors and friends from the good ol' days in Moses Lake.
Roma & Gordon at the Grave of Gordon's Parents.  The cemetary provided the FLAG for his father.
I asked Roma to bring the Quilt I gave her last week-end.  I wanted a better picture of her and I with it.  With us in this picture is Gordon and Allan, Paul was taking the picture. He is so funny, always waiting until I'm done talking so he can take the picture. After we got done taking pictures we visited with the people who came that we knew and Paul helped the Evans get their 'vase' out.  He said it took about 15 minutes and he looked up and there were 8 people standing around watching.   "Just like Government work", he said. We went and got lunch at the KFC where I had my first Fast Food Job.  The Lunch Buffet is pretty good there. Then we dropped Allan back off at his place and my cell phone rang.  It was my other Brother who lives in Moses Lake.  So we got to go and find his new place and visit a while.  Had to take our picture, I can't remember how many years it has been since I saw him.  Maybe 10?

It was getting later in the afternoon and Paul wanted to attend our Ward Picnic in Pioneer Park in the evening so on we travelled, back toward home. I always have my camera, but don't take pictures everytime we visit Dad and Mom Crowther.  Today was a day to Remember so a picture of Paul with his parents was taken.  I took one of Paul and his Dad while Mom went to comb her hair. Paul closed his eyes so I won't post it. I left another loaf of my homemade bread with them and delivered the "yellow" rose to Mom.  I took a couple of books that I thought Dad might not have read, just in case he has a sleepless night.  He loves to read.

The Ward Picnic in Pioneer Park was a success. The weather was questionable all day and there were a few 'sprinkles'.  I took all of my tablecloths so we wouldn't have to use the paper. The Elders carried all the tables for us.  I kept saying "More tables!"  Better too many than not enough, right? I took only a couple of pictures there after the Family Home Evening message by Brother Alter about the "Pledge of Alleigance"  I don't like to take picture s of people while they are eating. I heard they cooked 120  or more burgers and I don't know how many hot dogs. Another Memorial Day full of memories.  We had to "Wave" as we passed the Tri-cities.  Our Family there was "celebrating" without us.

Design Wall Monday- May 30, 2011

These are the two Quilts on my Design Wall and Floor that need borders.  The first is for a Charity Quilt for Guild the 2nd week of June. The Blocks are the May Block Lotto Blocks. I have sewn the blocks together and pinned the leftover HST's by the sides, they will be one of the borders. I'm auditioning fabrics that would make a framing border. This is a Bonnie Hunter FREE pattern found on her Quiltville site.
The Red and White are my D4P Blocks that I WON last Month HERE at Block Lotto.  Because the MONOCHROMATIC color for May is RED, I have been trying to get it finished at least to the "flimsy' stage. I'm thinking just a red border with a Four-patch cornerstone.  One more day...
My McCall's Design Star Challenge #1 is also in progress and will not be available for Viewing and Voting until June 25th-July 17th. As for now it is CLASSIFIED, "TOP SECRET"!!!

Remembering Week-end

This coming week-end is set aside to REMEMBER our departed loved ones.  Every year more are added to the list to be remembered.  We remember our Soldiers who have fought and died for our FREEDOM.  We remember our Ancestors also.  I've said many times before and blogged HERE about how my Mother and Grandmother called it "DECORATION DAY".  I remember saving tin cans and covering them with foil and filling them with daddy's flowers to take to the Cemetary. Taking water in a jar to put in the bouquets after they were placed. Peonies, Iris ((Flags), Roses, Bridal wreath, Snowball, Lilacs and Bleeding hearts were just a few flowers in my father's flower beds. I'm not sure if I'll make the pilgramage to Moses Lake this year to put flowers on my Parents grave.  Our son, Milton still has a part of the Snowball tree my Father had in my childhood backyard.  We planted some of it in Mesa and Burbank to remind us of my father.  There was one in our yard here in Walla Walla already.  It is blooming just in time for this week-end.  I can't see it without remembering many happy days by the snowball tree.
This year I've had some recurring memories come to my mind.  Memories of days long ago when I had two Grandpas who took time to love and teach me.  My Grandpa Waite passed away around Memorial Day when I was finishing my 6th grade year of school. I've told how he was my hero!  He caught the banty rooster who was attacking me at the screen door at the farm in Star, Idaho.  He took it to the chopping block and cut off it's head and swung it over his head and threw it into the gully. My Grandpa Brown, who was blind, taught me about my Pioneer ancestor; Captain James Brown.  He was a hero I grew up hearing about and being glad to have on my pedigree chart.  He marched across the plains with the Mormon Battalion as Captain of Company C. I shared a part of his history with my Sunday School class last week. July is usually the month to Remember our Pioneers.  I loved sitting and listening to Grandpa's stories when he came to visit us from Utah. He would give me money from his wallet to go and buy him "chicken bones" at the "Little Store" a few blocks away from our house.  He was blind, but I was amazed that he knew which coin and dollar bill was in his wallet.  (I think my mom put them in a certain order for him and folded down a corner).  I also remember eating his chocolate Ex-lax, it only took once!

This year I choose to Remember those who are still here!  We are so lucky to have Paul's parents still with us and we should take every chance we can to go and visit with them.  [edited to add Picture of Crowther Family in 1997] When Paul and I have gone to take flowers to Moses Lake in years past we also stop to take flowers and place on the grave of his little brother Joel's grave for his mother.  She has said before that we should take flowers to those who are still living, not wait until they are gone to take them flowers.
My Visiting teacher brought me these pretty purple flowers this week.  Thanks Karen!
P.S.  Thanks to my other Visiting Teacher, Noel and her daughter for bringing me CHOCOLATE tonight! Now the trick to keep it away from Hubby would just gobble it...

MAY -UFO #9 Finished!

I started this quilt back in 2008 when we had our last election in the USA.  I was a member of Stashbusters at the time and I made the Hatchet Blocks and put the center together back in 2008. It has been in the UFO tote since then.  I used White KONA cotton and Quilter's Shades in Navy and Red to make the stars. I quilted it doing free-motion stars and loops on my Bernina Quilt Table with STAR thread.
This is how I did the label, using the Stashbuster tip of a Square folded into a triangle and sewn into the corner.  Each State and how it voted is marked on the white fabric. Red for Republican and Blue for Democrat.
Thanks to Judy L of Patchworktimes who inspires us to get our UFO"S FINISHED!

These are the swap blocks I have received thus far from the ladies in the SBS and Other Elm Creek Quilter's group on Yahoo.  Mine is the lower right side.  I have 7 more coming to give me the set of 12.  I still have Block Lotto Blocks on one wall and the 6 New Year's Reflections blocks from my Friendship block swappers group.  I need to catch up on the Civil War Blocks and finish quilting my UFO for the month.  That's what is on the agenda.

Quilt Delivered!

Here is where we started our Morning.  At the Pasco Little League fields. Grandpa took this picture of Sam and parts of the rest of us watching Colby play T-Ball.  I was happy to know we finally made it, too bad it was the last game of the season. Colby is shown on Third Base in the 2nd picture.  Going to the Pasco Little League fields brought back memories of our younger days when every Tuesday, Thursday and/or Saturday we could be found there with our family cheering the players on.

After our session at the Columbia River Temple the wind was blowing but we got a few pictures anyway.  Sorry they aren't the best.  I was glad we were be able to meet Gordon and Roma there today.

Happy Birthday on Monday to my only Sister.  I gave her the quilt I made with fabric from our Momma.  She has seen it online, mostly likely Face book.  Now it is in her possession and she can wrap herself up in a hug from Momma and Me.
The world didn't end today and I was thinking of when I was little and watched the Twilight Zone from my sneaking point in the doorway of the bathroom.  One night my Brother, Selwyn and Sister, Roma caught me watching and said I'd better get to sleep, because the world was going to end.  I think I didn't sleep too well that night.  Today all day I thought, "Stand ye in Holy Places".  The Temple is that place to me.  It's the place I'd want to be if it was the time for the 2nd Coming of our Lord and Savior. But since "No one knows the hour..." We will enjoy the days we have together- while we can. I'm sorry that the rest of the family weren't home to visit today.

Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol 1-3

I received my copy of the 100 Blocks magazine in the mail this week.  Now I have all three of them.  That means 300 blocks to inspire and dream of another quilt to make. I really am impressed by the appliqued ones and think a floral applique quilt might be my next NEW project.  Not that I need one.  I like the way the magazine is divided into sections of Pieced, Mixed Technique, Applique and Foundation Piecing.  A bonus is the patterns are all full-sized and included in the magazine centerfold.  Thanks to Quiltmaker and the Quilty Pleasures Blog for the Blog Hop and chance to win. I had fun and got to meet more Designers online. I consider the magazines a real INSPIRATION. Some days it's nice to just sit and dream.
Today I finally listened to my CD's I bought of Donny and Marie singing.  I ordered their new CD from QVC and got the "Live in VEGAS" one along with it.  Thanks Donny and Marie for making beautiful music to hear as I play in my Quilt Zone...it's almost like being there.

4.5" Blocks (call me CRAZY)

These "Peace and Plenty" blocks require much trimming and patience!  I have the final three blocks in the mail to their destinations in Michigan, Indiana and Colorado. I have recieved blocks from 3 others.  There are a total of 12 to go in THIS QUILT from Jennifer Chiaverini.  I participated in 2 Swaps of these blocks.  One in 12" finshed blocks with the Mother's Favorite added and this one that we did only the 4.5" blocks. WHEW!
I love the Nancy Halvorsen fabrics. They are 'sew' smooth and 'sew' nice to use.  This will be a project for a while.  It has more paper piecing involved and I will have to do it in small spurts, since it's not my favorite.

May Block Lotto

Monday was the day I decided to make some 'Pineapple Blocks' for the http://blocklotto.blogspot.com/.  The instructions for the Lotto said to use a Gold and a Gray in them somewhere.  The pattern is from Bonnie Hunter and I have to say they are very addictive. You can see her finished Quilt HERE.  I was only going to make one.  Everybody knows I'm not fond of making Log Cabins but these "Pineapple Blocks' got me to at least try.  Don't tell my Quilt Buddy. LOL!  I had  a ziplock bag of strips from guild that I need to make a charity quilt out of.  It is from one of our deceased members. I just needed the white from my stash to go with them. Look how many I made waiting for my DH to come home from his late night at work...
Now I have another work in progress to finish before Guild next month.  The Block just called to me like in the "lays potato chips' commercials of long ago... "you can't eat just one!"

Design Wall Monday- May 16, 2011

My UFO #9 is on my Design Wall Monday Post this week.  I loaded it on the Quilt table after I took the Pictures so it is ready to finish this week.  I started this quilt when it was Election Time 3.5 years ago.  The number of Delagate votes counted are written on each Star with the names of each of the States.  In the colors of Republican or Democrat, according to the voting results.  I found this State flag fabric to use for the backing and added a solid white border around to attach it to the leaders better. I know the backing doesn't really match in color, but it's the BACK afterall... I will bind it in a solid RED fabric.
My question is what to quilt on it?  I'm thinking of some different Stars stitched with white thread

Stash Report- May 15, 2011

Used this week: 10.5 yards (corrected)

Used year to Date: 76.5 yards

Added this week: 6.875 Yards

Added Year to date: 69.625 yards

Net used to Date: +9.875 yards

I got fabric at Guild for taking my Marti Michell finished quilt and winning 2nd place.  My Secret Pal gave me 4 FQ's also. I've gotten gift cards and used them for Batting and thread and stuff so I didn't have to count the fabric. She's been too good to me.  It's nice that I'm using some each week or I'd definately go in the RED- 4.5" blocks don't use much! I had to make 4.5" blocks for a Swap. 1.5" HST's are not FUN!  I'm counting the backing, border and binding fabric for one of my UFO's #9 that needs to get quilted.  I had to come home from Church and add the donated 3 yards of a BATIK Fabric I found this week that I will NEVER use that I gave to a friend doing Charity quilts for our Church. I hope everyone is still having fun counting with all of us over at Judy L's Blog.

2011 Blogger's Quilt Festival

It looks like Blogger is back up and running.  My Quilt for this year is a very special one.  It is my own design and uses fabric I've had that was my mother's.  I've blogged it before and entered it into the McCall's Quilt Design Star Contest.  My family and FB friends have been faithfully VOTING every day.  I've been enjoying all the comments. You can click on the highlighted words or on the button at the top of the Blog until 12 AM, May 25 to go Vote.  THANKS! I wanted to use it to make a quilt for my only Sister's birthday this year. It's next week! I am not sure if she has seen it, she is a Blog follower. I quilted wild roses on the quilt. (See picture of quilting close-up). Our parents both loved roses. Daddy grew them and Momma loved to share them in bouquets on "Decoration Day".  This fabric is a border print and has a Purple rose in it also.  The Purple rose is the one I used for my Alliance for American Quilters Quilt.  I like to make quilts to remember me by. These two quilts were truly labors of LOVE.

So this is my Entry in the 2011 Blogger's Quilt Festival this year.  Go to AMY's Creative side BLOG HERE to see the rest of the Links for this online Quilt Festival. The festival is May 13-20.
It will inspire and amaze you, prizes too!

SBS Round Robin -4th Round

I've completed my SBS Round Robin that I have needed to get done with the SBS and Other Elm Creek Quilts Yahoo group. I have it on my UFO list as # 10-A.  Mine came home in February so I was way behind on this one. You can click the link to see it!  I have a displeasure of Paper-piecing and it has kept me stumped and discouraged.  I'm happy with the result in spite of my use of the old 'frogging' tool.  I found some interesting things in doing this 1/4 Mariner's Compass.  That's the reason I like to do the challenges - to learn, right?  If you sew them like this (see 1st Picture)...They don't fit right, but mimic the center of the quilt.
Here is how the quilt looks with the 1/4 Mariner's Compasses attached.  I noticed on the pattern book that we are using by Jennifer Chiaverini that I should have switched the green and gold points to be different than the center. I went and viewed the folder on the SBS Group and saw that I am not the only one who matched the center position of the points.  I am so glad to put this one in the mail.

May Finishes!

This month is looking good for Finishing projects.  So far I've finished the quilting on my Alabama Friend's KING sized quilt, quilted my January Monochromatic Challenge and my version of the American Beauty quilt with the BOM blocks from Guild last year.  YEA! it feels so good to have a few more quilts that I can cross of the list. FINISH is my word of the YEAR. And the month is only half over!

At Guild tonight there was a vote for the quilts made from last Year's BOM.  I won second place and got more of the Wild Roses Fabrics like what are in the pink quilt.  I will use them for another Marti Michell pattern that I've been wanting to make. It will be  awhile before I start on that though.  Lots of UFO's waiting still.  I'm getting more confident in using my quilt table. Free- motion on the pink quilt went fairly quickly and I had fun doing the feathers in the borders.

Design Wall Monday, May 9, 2011

This is the Block I won from Volume 2 of the 100 Blocks Magazine.  This was the first block in the magazine, Rosie's Posie. I like that it is signed by the designer; Cara Bonner of Quilt Nook Gal designs.
I won the autographed copy of Vol 2 magazine from Reeze Hanson of Morning Glory Designs. I've done the Blog Hop again for Volume #3, but so far haven't heard if I won a copy of the magazine or if I need to buy it.
 P. S. I just got the news that I WON  Vol # 3  at Quilty Pleasures!
Guild is this week and I need to have my second Marti Michell American Beauty quilt to show.  This is my own setting.  The original is set on point.  You can see my version of it Here and some of the quilting on it Here. They postponed the challenge from last month.  I'll have two chances if I get it done. This is my 2-A UFO for the Year.  It measures 55"x 69.5" right now.  Should I add another border??  I am wondering what fabric to use for the Binding also.  Please give me your opinion in the Comments.

Mom's in my Life

I have many Mom's in my life! My mom who gave me life first of all. She was always serving her family, Church and Community. I try as much as I can to emulate her goodness. I could never list all of her talents, they are multi-fold! She taught me most of them when I was home from school ill. Being sick wasn't as bad when she got to stay home from work with me and teach me. My mother went back to work when I was only 22 days old. I remember the chocolate covered graham crackers, coloring books, and vicks vaporub under the tent made by draping a sheet over my bed. I was reminded Friday of the times I got to sing and TRY to harmonize "You Are My Sunshine". What a sweet memory to have. She had our whole family sing in Church once "There is an Hour of Peace and Rest". She loved to sing. I found I don't have enough pictures of me with my MOMMA. Here is one of me and her after I graduated from High School. She didn't have the chance to graduate. She married my father when she was 16. I was her baby and I admit I was spoiled rotten! My sister says I had a different mom than she had. She left us soon after I became a Mom. So if you tire of me asking for pictures with your children, my grandchildren, I have no apologies! Many of the things I say, she said and I've tried to remind my children of her and what she taught me. I hope they never forget what a beautiful person she truly was.
My Mom's Mother was an example of service too. She served all of her 97 years. I feel privileged to have her name. The name has passed on to a 4th generation now. She listened to my teenage worries and tried to help me on my journey through those dreadful times. I loved having her come and stay with me and get to know my children. Each time she came she left us better people. She complimented my linen closet one time, how I folded my towels just so. She always said, about my choice of a Husband..."He's a Peach of a guy". She never let me forget how "lucky" I was.

I have a great Mother, by Love! Her Birthday is the day after mine, the same day as my Grandma Waite. She has been there since my mother passed away. She doesn't seek for attention. I am so grateful she was there for me in my child bearing years. She taught me how to be a better Mom. I am thankful that Paul and his siblings share her with me.

I have had substitute mom's in my life too. The women who were my mom's sisters, friends and my Babysitters, many who are no longer with us. Some were my Visiting Teacher Partners and Relief Society Sisters. They often shared a listening ear and a willing heart to serve.

I honor the MOM's in my life who have made me a Grandma! It's so much fun to be a grandma and hold a little new baby now and then... to give them a quilt that I made just for them. I remember G-ma Zora telling me how much she enjoyed the one on one time with each of her grandchildren. I understand why she said that now. 17 is a daunting number of children to entertain all at once. I love each one, and wish I could HUG you wherever you are today! I have had many "Happy Mother's Days". I have to mention few that stand out. One year, I came home from a PTA Covention and Paul had planted roses in our front yard in Umatilla, 6 of them, one for each of our children. He likes to remind me I'm NOT his Mother. The year Joseph returned from his Mission and talked on Mother's Day. That year I made corsages for all of us MOM'S. Thanks to the many Wards I lived in I've had many Long Stemmed Roses with bent stems and potted plants that withered and died. This year we get FUDGE!

I don't require all the fancy jewelry they show on TV. This year I'll feel lucky to get a few phone calls. I saw 4 of the 6 last week-end...I hope my children show honor to the Mom's at their own house.

Last of all I have to plug this quilt. It's a Gift for my Only Sister who is a great MOM! Made by me to honor my Momma. She once told me: "If you don't vote for yourself, how do you expect to win?" I can't Vote more than once a day and I need all my family and friends to click the link every day until May 25th and VOTE. I know I'm dreaming, but I have to dream. VOTE.

Design Wall Monday, May 2,2011

This is how it looked after sewing at Lynn's this week- before borders. Here is my Challenge quilt hanging at the quilt show. I didn't win the challenge :( but I had fun making this quilt to see if I could use the whole amount of fabric they sold to us for the challenge. I enjoy the process, I really don't enter to WIN but can't help wishing someday I will. Next year's challenge is "Flying Geese", no challenge fabric to utilize. And there is a size limit of no less than 36" no more than 54". Should be interesting. Click HERE to check out other Design Walls and be inspired.

Impromptu- Reunion

Thursday- Brant and Tina came for a visit with their 3 boys. First time visit for the new baby out of State. I've been a little busy to Blog about all that we have done. NaDell Blogged on Friday night HERE. Because Brant came -everyone wanted to get-together. We thought Friday would work best except that Grandpa, who was at a "Woodbadge Training" and Andy, who was out of town working couldn't make it. Milton and his boys had a Cub Scout Over-night campout but made time to come and visit - Thanks! How many grandchildren can you put on a Airplane teeter-totter? (almost all of them)Joe and Kori were kind to let us invade their yard- that looks like a park -BTW, and bought several kinds of Pizza, hot wings and cinnamon dessert pizzas. I appreciate that they like to get the cousins together. They are a bit loud, but have lots of fun when they get to play together. Here are the two families who came to Church today. All dressed in their Sunday Best! The Ransom's joined us for the second shift of Dinner after Church. then the kids went outside to Play. Aunt Tina is blowing bubbles for them to pop.The oldest grandchildren are almost as tall as her. Grandpa took time out to visit with them outside. It was such a nice day- weather wise. Thanks to Brant for mowing the grass for us. Brant took this picture of me- one Tired grandma who didn't get her Sunday NAP. This is Abigail in a dress than my friend LeAnn made for NaDell when she was born. Today was also the day I said goodbye to my 'son from another Mother'... Elder Keeler lived with us when we started housing the Elders. He and his Companion came for a later dinner. Sorry they had to eat our leftovers... Elder Keeler was true to form and wanted to unload and load my Dishwasher for me. I'm sure his Mother and Father will be sooooo happy to see him and his twin brother when they fly home this week. Home just in time for Mother's DAY! Thanks kids for coming, it was almost like our old Sunday evening get-togethers. See you all next time. Summer is almost here.

Yea, A week in the black. It's great to be able to use some fabric. I completed the quilting on my Challenge quilt for the Krazy Horse Quilt show. It will premier on the Monday Design Wall this coming week. Click HERE for the links at Judy L's Blog for more Stash reports.

2011 Krazy Horse Quilt Show ETC

Saturday didn't go as previously planned. Some days are like that. I hadn't planned to attend the Relief Society Conference here in town. This morning I asked Tina if she wanted to go with me to it or to the Quilt show. Another long ride doesn't appeal to her with the new baby, I thought so we went to the meeting and had great speakers and a nice Luncheon. The Chicken salad and cupcakes were especially yummy. I'm so glad we could go together. Nice to be flexible, right?I called and asked Wendy to go with me to Pendleton for the quilt show. It was fun, and she reminded me we haven't done something fun together for quite a while. Wendy Took this picture of me with my Bouquet of Friendship.Above is two of the walls of the Challenge quilts in the back of the Convention Center, only a few of the entires. Mine is in there. Can you guess which one? I won't know who won the most viewers vote until after I get to talk to someone who goes tomorrow. Or when I pick my quilts up from Marlene's on Monday. This is a 3-D flower from one of the pretty quilts there. I had to take a close-up. Too many pretty quilts to show them all on here. There were several quilts made from Buggy Barn Patterns and from Eddie Walker's class last year. The featured quilter was Helene Knott this year. The patterns that are mostly known as hers are Vegetables as Cats.
