Teaching the Kid's Class

The past 3 days have been busy teaching 3 Girls how to make my Strippy Stars Quilt.
The class was scheduled to be during thier SPRING Break at
Walla Walla Sew and Vac & Spas.

They were fun girls and I hope they learned 2 things.
A 1/4" seam and Pins are very important.
There were a set of Twins and thier Friend who took the class.
For privacy reasons I will refer to them by Twin #1, Twin #2 and M.

The first day we learned how to Cut the fabric strips and squares .
Next they drew a Diagonal line across each of the Squiares,
Then they started randomly sewing the strips into 2's , then into 3's.
 Learning to Chain piece.

Here they are with their 1st Blocks

    Twin #1                                                             M                                                        Twin #2

I had them do a set of 10, then showed them how to place the corner square and stitch on the line. Really just to one side of the line so when it is folded back it makes a square.

I was happy with their fabric choices for the Points of the stars.
My Sample quilt doesn't show off the Stars as much as it would with a darker fabric.

They enjoyed using my Gypsy Cutting Tool to cut between the blocks.
The Pressing station was busy too.

On Day 2 we Counted the blocks they were making and found that the hadn't been particular in which corners the Square went on.
Here are the stacks of Blocks Wrong and Correct.
Twin #2 didn't make as many that were wrong.
She chose to cut more strips and re-make hers correctly.
M's Blocks were about half wrong so she chose to make a variation my pattern.
At the end of Day 2 Twin #1 had enough Blocks to sew 2 rows together.

Twin #2 with her Blocks all laid out.
She got her blocks sewn in to the Center but ran out of the Inner Border fabric.
She had enough for 3 sides.  She will have to buy more of the red and finish the rest at home

M laid her block out alternating the striped parts so that they still make the Stars.
She got hers center sewn together by the time we left.
She decided to make more blocks to have a longer quilt, then she will add her borders.

Twin #1 wanted her blocks to go up and down so her "Stars slant to the Right"
Her inner Borders got attatched mostly. The last side she was in a hurry and needed to re-sew it.
I demo-ed how to Measure for the Borders with her quilt so they could all watch how to do that.

We stayed 2 hours over, past the end of today's class to get this far.,.
Next time we will schedule more days/time for a Kid's class.
They all hope to enter these quilts in the Walla Walla Fair later this year.
