Design Wall Monday- September 9, 2013

Pam Buda Sew-Along Blocks are on my Design Wall Posting today.

  I am amazed at the way each block is so different. I made my last block matching the Hst's for the Flying Geese.  Now that I look at Pam's block HERE again it reminds me more of a Buzz Saw block. 

I can make one that is totally random since I have more HST's to use up. After seeing Judy D's this morning I'm wondering which one I've missed sewing.

 Pam promises something even more exciting and different this coming Friday.  I can hardly wait. 

 It's Friday the 13th and my oldest son's 36th Birthday.  I'm not superstitious...much, LOL

 I got the borders on my "Somewhere in Time" quilt. I am happy with this quilt and the motion that the Light Blue makes with the Cream colored stars.

September NewFO

I didn't list a NewFo for the Month. I already have plenty to keep me busy.  I got the new Pattern Book of the "Loyal Union Sampler" in the mail and have joined the Yahoo Group to make the quilt a Block a week.  At that rate it could take a couple years. There are 121 blocks in this Sampler. 

 I 'tested' 5 Blocks for the Book and my name is listed as one of Jennifer's friends.  

I found the quilts that my blocks are in and now can show them to you.

I have to decide still what fabrics to use in my LUS (Loyal Union Sampler)  I'm leaning toward the scrappy Blue and White version. I did the 3 Blue and White Blocks, using my B & W stash, with the first call for help and when a 2nd call went out, I got the patterns plus the fabric from Jennifer to make the last two.

Jennifer will be in Colorado signing her new Book " The Spymistress" in October. Link to read the first Chapter is HERE. I'm hoping DH can get vacation time and take me to see her. 

 I could get her to sign my LUS Book too. Wish me LUCK!

2013 "Get it Done" September Goals/ NewFo Link-up

I didn't do as well as I thought I would on my goals but as you saw on my DWM post, I did a LOT at the Fair.

My NewFO was my Pickle Dish/Gameboard quilt that is now called "PARCHEEZI"

This was a class I started in August so it counts as a NewFO.

I have Quilt guild next week and could possibly have the Flimsy tops to show.  I know that I should only show my "FINISHES".  My Sew n Vac friend told me that. I might forget if I've shown them so IF I get them to flimsy I might show them now. I'm saving the Star and Crown to 'reveal' at the Walla Walla Valley Quilt Festival.

Fair Winners

 I took this photo of the "Best of Show" winner when she came to see her Quilt hanging at the Fair.  Audrey has been quilting only about 5 years.  This was the most expensive quilt she has ever made, she said.  Her quilt was Professionally quilted by Marlene of kissedquilts.  The Glacier Star is a Judy Niemeyer pattern available only through a certified Instructor. The class was sponsored by our quilt guild. About 25 ladies started this quilt and two were shown at the Fair. How many will there be at Quilt Festival???

The Pink and Purple & Lavender (Fairy Frost) Double Wedding Ring was "Reserve Best of Show". It was Hand Quilted. It was my FAVORITE but I gave my Superintendent Ribbon to the Sunbonnet Sue (2nd from the left on the top row.)
There were a LOT of BLUE RIBBON quilts.  I'm glad I chose a Judge who knows her stuff!

Here is the display of Open Class Adult Cross stitch, Rug hooking and Needlepoint that didn't fit in my area at the Fair.

 The Open Class Youth display was in the alcove at the Fair also.  "Best of Show" went to a quilter and "Reserve Best of Show" was a cute Frog latch hook Pillow.  My Superintendent Ribbon went to the bigger quilt on the right.

 My 3 Fair Entries brought a patriotic array of ribbons--- one Blue, one Red and one White.

The Judge was big on "finishing".  I didn't 'block' my knitted and crocheted entries and it showed in the comments.

I was asked many times why I didn't have any quilts in the Fair.  It was because of my mis-informed Superintendent.  She e-mailed while I was in Utah to tell me she was wrong and I could enter in my Department.  It was too late for this year, I didn't have the information to do it by e-mail.
I was also asked why more Quilt Guild ladies didn't enter their quilts in the Fair.  I think they save them all for the Festival.  That's just my opinion.
I talked to a lot of people and have more ideas for next year. Ways to Demonstrate "quilting" and interact with the fair goers.  

Fun Crowther Cousins (picture overload)

I was in Grandma Heaven on Saturday! So was Grandpa.

They went Saturday Morning to Tri-cities to visit Great-Grandma Crowther and to meet Katie, too.

 Paul got his first look at Katie. There is her big brother; Colby who pulled a muscle on top of his foot showing off, jumping off a swing for his cousins last week.

at Great- Grandma Crowther's outside by the parking lot.

 There were 9 of the 19 Grandchildren with us at the FAIR to walk the booths, exhibits 
and barns to see all there was to see.

  It was Hot, but the kids had fun.

There were wheels to spin for prizes, Bean bags to throw, firetrucks to climb... 
Lots of FREEBIES!

The firemen took pictures of all but Jared sitting up in the Firetruck.  

They printed them and put them in a frame for the kids.  NICE Firemen in Walla Walla.

                                       

  The Wenatchee Mariachi Band and dancers came to perform on Saturday.

 It was loud but fun to hear and see from way up here.  I had to go downstairs as well to get another view.

Uncle Milton with the baby after we ate our Dippity Dogs, and Footlongs with special sauce.

We sat out in the grass and enjoyed the people watching.  Girls were flipping on the Bungee Jump.

  The rodeo was fun too. One of the PERKS being a Superintendent was that I got some

 FREE Grandstand tickets for Saturday night.  

I should have bought the extra ones so all of Milton's kids could join us.  

Just Jared and Coy came with us.

 I got to rock the baby for a while.  

That kept me from screaming as much.  My voice is mostly gone from talking to all the fair-goers that passed me in the Pavilion. It was even more fun to have the Wyoming family come to see it with us.  

It was their first Rodeo.

The Ransom's came on Sunday after we got out of CHURCH. I was glad I found someone to spend time at my spot so I could be with my family part of the day.  They brought a Ham and we all ate in the Living room. Quite the crowd.  I'm sure there were pictures taken by NaDell. Her Blog is HERE.

I'm tired and achy, but I was glad I could Volunteer at the Fair! 

 Was it worth it?  Ask me in a few more months...

Design Wall Monday- Labor Day 2013

I feel today like I've had 5 "Labor Days"  at the Walla Walla Fair.  I did get a LOT accomplished though.  It was long and some what HOT days.  I had the Best place to sit and sew!  Right by the BIG Swamp Cooler.  I used muscles that haven't moved like that in a while, too.  

LOTS of walking, I wonder if I have lost any weight or inches??

This Mini quilt was made from the bonus triangles of Katie's Choice quilt. I added the border and got this top finished last week at the Walla Walla Fair. Many left over Half-square triangles make a cute Dolly quilt.

My #2 Jack of Hearts Mystery from my 2013 UFO list finally has the blocks sewn together

This is the layout I thought would happen, I was wrong, but I liked it a decided to make it also.

I'm not sure why I had an extra block from this one left

I took all of my bonus triangles from my "Midnight Flight" and stitched them together, too. 

 On the last couple of days My helper and I got the dog ears trimmed and put in sets of 10. 

 There are 350 Purple and 140 of the Black /Cream HST's.

 I'm still debate whether to use them for a Feathered star or Ocean waves quilt.

I made this Pam Buda Blocks with some HST's that I already had sewn and trimmed.  

I didn't take time to cut the solid Cream squares to make last Friday's Block HERE.

It was a successful week!  the State Fair Judges came and our Pavilion was awarded this pretty Black and white Ribbon for our Displays and Demonstrations.  I'm still thinking of more ways to Demonstrate quilting at the Fair next year... 

Ann and I missed the Big photo at the Bottom of the stairs so we are inset in the corner.

 I'm so glad I decided to sit and sew to while away the hours.

 

Lastly I did my Homework for my Pickledish/Gameboard quilt.  I got a great suggestion for the Name last week.  "Parcheezi"  I like that a lot! I still need to press and trim  them before I sew them together.

                                    

 I had two extra... they can go on the back maybe.

Wednesday is Free Admission Day!

Since Wednesday is the official start of the Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days.

I am writing this ahead and setting this to post at the same time as it is Opening.

It's my first time to be a Volunteer and being in charge of a whole area has been difficult.

I'm still trying to get people to come and Help me Monitor during the fair.

Today a Clerk that I had pre-arranged to help came to help with a few of the last minute things. 

She has been out of town and I wasn't sure when she was coming home.

She helped me put the "quilty" words on a poster board sign. 

She took my picture to see what the fair-goers will see as they come by.

 Today, I wrote up and framed the story of my "Double Wedding Ring Quilt and put it there beside me.

I added at the Bottom--- "Every Quilt has a story- Don't forget to write it down."

(I still need to add the signs with the ages on there.)

I'll post the Winners after the Fair so I don't spoil anyone's surprises.

Grandma Date

I have taken each of my grandchildren to Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner when they turned 8.  In the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints, it is the age of accountability and they are Baptised and Confirmed.  I showed Olivia's Baptism HERE already.  I determined when our oldest grandchild came to the milestone age that I would like to make it extra special and have some "One on One" time with them to do this.  So far I've taken all of them and I hope they will always remember how special they are to me. It helps that they are only an hour from where I live. I'm not sure how I'm be able to do this with the far-away grandchildren. It might be a little different and have to be when I see them sometime around their 8th birthday (maybe when they come visit)  As I have taken them, if they have an older sibling who has gone they are excited and already know where we are going.  This trip wasn't easy to plan.  Grandma's car is being 'fixed' so I had to drive Grandpa's Truck and make sure I knew all the rules to get the booster seat so she could ride up front.  They know there will be PICTURES!  I'm the picture taking Grandma...

 First off, they get to choose where they want to eat!  Olivia chose "SONIC". 

Chicken nuggets, Tots and a Lime Smoothie.

Then we went to the Far West Bookstore and bought her a Journal.  

She was very methodical in the choosing.  I have their name engraved on it and encourage them to write in it on Sundays to think about and remember the things they learned.   The book store was busy so NaDell had to take Olivia to pick it up.  I didn't get a Picture of her with her journal.  Next I take them up the road to the Columbia River Temple for a picture by the sign.  It shows how tall they are. Olivia reminded me she has been here before and had her picture taken. Maybe not by the sign, and it wasn't when she was 8. 

 She is on the path, to prepare to enter the Temple when she turns 12.

It was a Monday and the gates were locked.  

We couldn't walk around the temple like I have with the others. 

There are more flowers, fountains and other pretty places to take pictures.

Olivia is used to 'posing'.

She wanted a picture on the steps, then saw the pretty flowers and sat up there.

In Primary they sing a song about turning 8.

I also took time to go and visit my husband's Mother.  It is from her that I learned the most fun thing a grandma can do is have 'One on One' time with the grandchildren. 

On my way home I was able to meet my newest grand-daughter. Her arrival was early in the morning. I waited until her big brothers had gotten to meet her.  

They are all so happy to have a sister/daughter. 

I say 3rd times the Charm for them.

Design Wall Monday- August 26, 2013

Tonight is the final class for the Pickledish/Gameboard.  I'm have enjoyed taking another class from Eddie.
Amidst all the hustle and WORK of getting ready for FAIR... and a few "Family" EVENTS!  I haven't made much progress on my Blocks so all I can do is show the whole 4 blocks that I finished at last week's class. I'm glad I chose these colors. You can see all of last Wednesday's Progess posting HERE.

 I think I'll be working on this during the time I am at the Fair.  I have several of my Vintage Machines set up with the Quilts.  I can choose to use a different one each day, LOL

While waiting for the Fair Entries to come in I knitted this Dishcloth with a Capital "T".

I am a bit overwhelmed to be in charge of the Open Needlework Section. I've had help from my Dear Hubby (DH) and 2 good friends. It's been some very long days and a LOT of walking up and down stairs and ladders the past week. I never knew how much was involved with being a Volunteer at the FAIR.
Then ---there is Paperwork.  I am making a long list of To-Do's for next year.
 A few muscles that haven't been used in a while are yelling at me.

Dear Grand-daughter #2 Baptism

 Sunday night was a Special occasion--- Olivia got to wear her 2nd White Dress.

She was baptized by her Father.
She was Confirmed and given a nice blessing too.

I asked for a 3-generation picture.
 The White Dress was first worn by Olivia's Mother.

Olivia also got her Purple Towel with her name on it.

We will plan the traditional 8 Year old Grandchild/Grandma Date when my Car is fixed. 

Long Story-short-

Thank heavens for an Engineer in the family and a small boy to fit and get my keys out of the locked truck! 

I have mailed the Red towel to the Birthday Boy who has a Birthday this week.

We will have to wait to meet our newest Grand-daughter too. She will be born Soon. 

Pictures of her are going to be limited per family request. This is our 19th Grandchild!
